Show Notes Transcript

Hey everybody, this is Chris Brandt, here with another FUTR podcast.

Databricks hosted their Data + AI World Tour event in Chicago on October 3rd, and with all of the hype around AI, Generative AI and Large Language Models, this was the perfect place to get a feel for what is going on.

To start with, it was a well attended event, in fact it was a sold out event, and I understand that similar events in other cities around the world were also sold out.

The theme for the show was Generation AI, a clever play on Gen AI, but certainly this is a kind of generational change we are seeing. Databricks is coming off a hot streak, with their last raise valuing them at $43 Billion

Ari Kaplan, Databricks' Lead Evangelist, was there to deliver a keynote address, "Welcome to Generation AI." If you aren't familiar with Ari Kaplan, he is considered to be the "Real Moneyball Guy". Chris Brandt:

I'm here with Lee Blackwell of Databricks. Hello, hello. Data AI World Tour Chicago. Data AI World Tour Chicago. It was a great show. So I will put up a link to Lee's episode and I'll tell you all about the show in a minute. See ya. Hey everybody, this is Chris Brandt here with another FUTR podcast. Today we're doing it a little different. Uh, no interview today because I went to a Databricks conference and I want to tell you a little bit. About that. So Databricks hosted their data and AI world tour event in Chicago on October 3rd. And with all of the hype around AI, generative AI, and large language models, this was the perfect place. To get a feel for what's going on to start with. It was a well attended event. In fact, it was a sold out event and I understand that similar events in other cities around the world were also sold out. The theme for the show was generation AI, a clever play on the Gen AI term, but certainly this is a kind of generational change that we are seeing and Databricks is coming off a hot streak with their last raise valuing them at over 43 billion dollars. Ari Kaplan, Databricks lead evangelist, was there to deliver a keynote address, Welcome to Generation AI. And if you aren't familiar with Ari Kaplan, he is considered to be the real moneyball guy. Ari regaled us with stories from his time in Chicago sports, which went over well with the local crowd. The breakout sessions ranged from everything from monetizing data to lake house AI deep dives. But the sessions that seemed to be on everyone's list were the LLM ones. They had LLM ops, next generation customer experiences, and elevating retail with large language models. But it was a topic that came up in almost. every session. Now there was a lot of emphasis on RAG, Resource Augmented Generation, coupled with LLMs, which allow companies to integrate their own data sources into LLM responses. And there were some special breakout sessions with Tredence, Qlik. Some of you may know us as Qlik, but it is actually surprisingly, um, I stand corrected. So what do they do? Click is a data integration and analytics company, uh, headquartered in, uh, in Pennsylvania. And then there was Sigma. Today we're going to be talking about how to revolutionize retail analytics, using Sigma input tables on Databricks. Some of the other vendors that were there were Immuta, Tableau, Prophecy, SAP, Slalom, Dataiku, and Google, to name a few. And it was great to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. And there is a lot to learn about the state of generation AI. And it was an awesome show. And I'm glad I got to go. And I just want to say thanks for watching. And if you could give us a like, give us a subscribe, and I will see you in the next one.
